Everything You Need to Know About the High-Performance Brand

For some, “N” is just a letter. Those familiar with the Hyundai high-performance brand know it can also be a way of life. If you’re wondering “what does the Hyundai N badge mean?” the Ray Skillman Southside Hyundai team has your answers.

What’s In a Name? The Origins of the N

The letter N following a Hyundai brand is more than just a random letter. Hyundai chose the “N” to represent the Namyang district of South Korea. It’s here that the N brand was born, and Hyundai continues to maintain a global research and development center.

There’s a second rationale behind choosing N to denote high-performance vehicles. The Nuremberg race track in Germany is home to Hyundai’s technical center, where the automaker tests its N brand vehicles. Sharp-eyed observers will also notice that the “N” logo resembles a classic chicane, a tight, serpentine turn in a road, which the N brand vehicles can tackle with aplomb.

The Birth of a High-Performance Brand

Hyundai introduced the high-performance N brand in 2012 when the Namyang R&D Center assembled a team of researchers to develop high-performance autos. The automaker displayed its initial offering, the i20 WRC concept car, at the Paris Motor Show later that year.

Though the i20 WRC race car made its debut the following Spring at the Geneva Motor Show, the N logo wasn’t revealed until the unveiling of the 2014 i20 WRC. The i20 WRC N claimed its first victory during the Rallye Deutschland, at which point the R&D center introduced the RM concept series to the world.

Next came the i30 N prototype, which you might recognize as the Hyundai Elantra N model. The i30 N was the first Hyundai model to complete the Nürburgring’s 24-hour endurance race, leading to the production of this N-series car.

Hyundai has bestowed the N badge on other vehicles in its lineup, including the Hyundai Kona N SUV. Though it went out of production at the end of 2023, the Kona N delivered a dynamic driving experience

Introducing the Newest N Vehicle: The IONIQ 5 N

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N is the latest vehicle to be added to the automaker’s high-performance roster. This Hyundai EV SUV deserves the designation and was specifically designed to prioritize power and track-ready features, accelerating from 0 to 60 in 3.25 seconds with N Launch Control.

The IONIQ 5 N is the brand’s first EV SUV, and it comes out the starting line with a flourish. Good for 641 hp, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N is a track-ready performance vehicle. It’s also the most powerful and fun-to-drive Hyundai, with N Grin Boost and N Drift Optimizer included.
